2) Developing Your Negotiation Skills

Skilled negotiators are not born - they are made through effective skills training programs.

Negotiation is NOT just about winning at the expense of the other party. It is about creating a win-win climate so that both you and the other party can win. Winning in negotiation is about creating the climate, exploring the possibilities and agreeing on the best possible outcomes.

Negotiation is essential to a productive work environment. It provides the mechanism for reaching agreements between people, organizations and countries. Negotiation also helps prevent conflict and improve the quality of workplace relationships.

This training program offers strategies that focus on discovering individual perspectives and interests, and applying techniques that engage cooperation and joint problem solving. These strategies will help you put together and suggest mutually satisfying solutions in a wide variety of circumstances. You will develop the skills required to encourage respectful relationships with colleagues and adversaries alike. At the end of this workshop, you will have a better grasp of the communication and negotiation skills that promote mutually beneficial agreements, the resolution of conflicts and the overall satisfaction of everyone concerned.

Target Participants: Anyone who must negotiate when problem-solving, and when working on tasks, projects, or conflict prevention. All executives, officers and supervisors who wish to acquire negotiation skills for day-to-day use.

Target Organization: Public/Private/ NGO/INGO/Financial institution etc.

Workshop Topics
• Discovering the merits of negotiation
• Understanding the negotiation process
• Planning and preparing for negotiations
• Analyzing the situation from different perspectives
• Assessing the relative power of the stakeholders in reaching a negotiated solution
• Pinpointing problems
• Communicating effectively during negotiations
• Behaviors that foster win-win solutions
• Taming the difficult negotiator
• Developing your negotiation strategy for success

Consider the scenario of two persons trying to compete for an orange:
a. If both fight and the orange get squashed in the process, then both lost.
b. They can simply cut the orange into half, then, both win half.
c. Or one can pay the other for half of the orange then one wins the orange while the other wins cash.
A better idea is to find out what each party wants to do with the orange and distribute the values accordingly. So if one party wants the peel to make marmalade while the other is thirsty for the juice, then the winning solution will be a complete win-win for both parties.

Workshop Objectives
By the end of the workshop, participants will be able to:
• Acquire the art and skills of negotiation;
• Create the correct climate to facilitate the negotiation;
• Understand the different points of leverage and use them accordingly;
• Use the appropriate negotiation techniques to achieve the desired outcome; and
• Create a win-win situation in the negotiation
