I love quotes by Voltaire and Neitzsche.

Here's one
Hope is the worst of all evils because it prolongs the torments of man.
Nietszche

Read quotes by them... and don't miss a SINGLE by Voltaire. I really mean it.

I have collected some "atheistic" quotes of Voltaire here
http://decentdissent.blogspot.com/2008/04/voltaire-quotes-god.html

Trust me, the others are equally good.

Aldous Huxley:

At least two thirds of our miseries spring from human stupidity, human malice and those great motivators and justifiers of malice and stupidity, idealism, dogmatism and proselytizing zeal on behalf of religious or political idols.

Aldous Huxley:

At least two thirds of our miseries spring from human stupidity, human malice and those great motivators and justifiers of malice and stupidity, idealism, dogmatism and proselytizing zeal on behalf of religious or political idols.

Friedrich von Schiller:

Isaac Asimov:

[W]hen people thought the Earth was flat, they were wrong. When people thought the Earth was spherical they were wrong. But if you think that thinking the Earth is spherical is just as wrong as thinking the Earth is flat, then your view is wronger than both of them put together.

Malcolm Forbes:

It is one of the blessings of old friends that you can afford to be stupid with them.

Sam Levenson:

It's so simple to be wise. Just think of something stupid to say and say the opposite.

Will Rogers:

If stupidity got us into this mess, then why can't it get us out?

I hope you have heard about Ayn Rand, the propounder of Objectivist Philosophy. Here are some vey good quotes from her:

A creative man is motivated by the desire to achieve, not by the desire to beat others.

A government is the most dangerous threat to man's rights: it holds a legal monopoly on the use of physical force against legally disarmed victims.

Achievement of your happiness is the only moral purpose of your life, and that happiness, not pain or mindless self-indulgence, is the proof of your moral integrity, since it is the proof and the result of your loyalty to the achievement of your values.

Ask yourself whether the dream of heaven and greatness should be waiting for us in our graves - or whether it should be ours here and now and on this earth.

Civilization is the progress toward a society of privacy. The savage's whole existence is public, ruled by the laws of his tribe. Civilization is the process of setting man free from men.

Contradictions do not exist. Whenever you think you are facing a contradiction, check your premises. You will find that one of them is wrong.

Do not ever say that the desire to "do good" by force is a good motive. Neither power-lust nor stupidity are good motives.

Every man builds his world in his own image. He has the power to choose, but no power to escape the necessity of choice.

Force and mind are opposites; morality ends where a gun begins.

God... a being whose only definition is that he is beyond man's power to conceive.

Love is the expression of one's values, the greatest reward you can earn for the moral qualities you have achieved in your character and person, the emotional price paid by one man for the joy he receives from the virtues of another.

want to comment on any of them...???u r welcome!

It is not from the benevolence of the butcher, the brewer, or the baker that we expect our dinner, but from their regard to their own interest. We address ourselves, not to their humanity but to their self-love, and never talk to them of our own necessities but of their advantages.

"How selfish soever man may be supposed, there are evidently some principles in his nature, which interest him in the fortunes of others, and render their happiness necessary to him, though he derives nothing from it, except the pleasure of seeing it."

Well , better for whom? sure, from your personal perspective, strength might be attractive, but what does that attitude do to the civilization as a whole?

however, one might argue that to be good is also a sort of strength.I don't know , it's all grey.
